单 读 英 文 版 来 了

看报看报，2020，《单读》推出英文版。

英文版《单读》从天而降？

自 2018 年开始，《单读》就一直和《洛杉矶书评》（The Los Angeles Review of Books）、纸托邦（Paper Republic）保持着密切合作，把一系列中文文章翻译成英文，并在海外发表。

引入海外年轻作者的作品，是《单读》的愿景，而将中文世界的写作推向海外，是更难的任务。

终于，我们交出了这本 BEYOND THE CITY：A collection of non-fiction from modern China，努力往前跨出了一大步。

讲述非虚构的中国故事

这是一本有关当下中国的非虚构合集，收录了中国当代青年写作者的纪实作品。许知远、梁鸿、袁凌、颜歌、谢丁、林珊珊、李静睿、晓宇、孙中伦等长期关注本土现实的作家代表作，都被收录在这本书里。

我们尤其高兴地收入了皮村文学小组的作品，他们直面现实的写作为我们的文学版图注入了新的动力。

我们邀请了一批与中文世界互动密切的译者，Allen Young, Kate Costello, Nicky Harman, Helen Wang, Jeremy Tiang, Michael Day, Nicky Harman, Jack Hargreaves, Mike Fu, Poppy Toland, Dave Haysom, Luisetta Mudie, Natascha Bruce。他们的母语是英语，同时又对中国文学充满热情，为我们完成了出色的转译。

除了城市，我们还拥有什么？

在 Beyond the City 里，故事的主角大多是不为人注意的乡村、小城、小镇，以及其中平凡而真实的生命。即使在中文的世界里，他们也是几乎隐形的存在，不易被察觉、很少被讲述，却更值得被记录和留存。

在城市之外，也就是超越城市这个注意力中心，去往被现代化遗落的空间，去往广袤的边缘地带，去和那些真实而坚韧的命运相遇。

一个英文阅读与写作的新起点

这一次与友邻优课 YLYK 联合推出的英文版《单读》（非虚构版）BEYOND THE CITY  将是我们未来工作的新起点。

对于有兴趣的读者而言，这不仅是一份阅读和学习英文的材料，更是通过另一种语言理解中国故事、理解我们自身的机会。

Introduction

Stories matter, tremendously. It is through observing other people’s lives that we come to understand the complexities of our own being, draw closer to reality, and gain deeper insights about life as a whole.

In this collection, we bring together some of the most prolific young writers of non-fiction in China. Representing a wide variety of identities themselves, from media professionals to migrant-worker-turned-authors, they portray lives that have once failed to find a place in grand and mainstream narratives.

These lives lie outside of what we appear to care and value. They stretch beyond centers and cities to the uncredited and undefined rural towns. Trivial and irrelevant as they may seem, these are truth-revealing stories that deserve to be recorded.
